Crime and Violence

  • Arizona’s violent crime rate involving guns is one of the highest in the nation.  Arizona ranked 6th out of the 50 states in 2004 in the rate of violent crime involving guns (161.8 per 100,000 in Arizona vs 113.7 per 100,000 in the U.S.).  In 2004, 34% of all violent crimes involved guns in Arizona – substantially more than in the U.S. as a whole, where 26% of violent crimes involved guns. 
  • Arizona’s homicide rate involving guns is one of the highest in the nation.  Arizona  ranked 6th out of the 50 states in 2004 in the rate of homicides involving guns (5.3 per 100,000 in Arizona vs 4.1 per 100,000 in the U.S.).  Well over half of these homicides (60%) involved a handgun, 7% a rifle, and 3% a shotgun. 
  • Half of all robberies and a quarter of aggravated assaults involved guns.  In 2004, 51% of robberies and 27% of aggravated assaults involved the use of guns in Arizona.  These statewide percentages are greater than those for the nation (41% for robberies and 19% for aggravated assault in the U.S.).
